Day of the Dead

Join the team as we remember loved ones that are no longer with us.

Morgan:

Grandpa Paul Loose, my Mom's Dad. I never went to traditional day care and my grandparents lived close by, so I spent a lot of time getting to know them and be in each other's lives. It was wonderful. We rode around his white convertible. He's pictured with me and my siblings.

He was a horse man very young. One of the first children of his parents to be born on the United States.

The picture with Paul and the lovely dark haired woman in the stands, was taken at the Jefferson County Fair Grounds at my first horse show. My Mom rode Westernaire's too, and this was my big debut. The lovely dark haired woman was my Grandmother Mabel. You can also see my Mom looking off in the distance.

My grandpa instilled the love of horses in both my Mom and then me. I was so proud to have him at that show.

He was the first person I knew with dementia, and his wife Mabel, my Grandma, was the second. You can start to see it in the final photo. In him at least, my Grandma was a little while on.

They both impacted my lives in ways I could never describe. These photos show a snip it!

I loved him, and my memories are all sweet.

Happy Dio de Los Meurtos,

Desiree:

Grandma Bella Herrera, my husband’s grandmother.

From the day I first met Bella, she opened her heart to me, she loved me like I was her own. Bella was an amazing woman, she always put family first, never forgot a birthday, always gave the best cards, no matter the occasion. She always made everyone she met feel so special.

She was only 4’11 but the strongest person I’ve ever known. She survived breast cancer two times before it came for the third and last time. She passed away six years ago but it feels likely we just lost her.

The first photo was taken at her cabin at Twin Lakes, my family, Grandma Bella and her Husband, Fred.

The second photo is of my husband, Aldo and Grandma Bella fishing.

The third is of Grandma Bella and few of her great grandchildren.

Chelsea:

My role model, my constant, my dad!

My father, Mikel Dodson, was my hero. We didn't always have it easy, but our relationship grew to be the strongest relationship I knew. I primarily lived with my mom after my parents divorced until I was a teenager and moved in with my dad. I learned more about who I was and who I wanted to be due to this experience. He taught me what it means to be vulnerable and strong. He showed me the value of hard work. He taught me to never give up. He was kind, passionate, ornery, and he thought he was funny :-).

My dad was a master fisherman, a hunter, an outdoor enthusiast and a man many adored. He used to hold us down and tickle us until we told him he was the master fisherman of the world. There is not a day that goes by that I don't think about him, and I am so grateful God allowed me to call this man dad, even though his time was cut short. I love you daddy always and forever!

We Walk to Remember

Maintain Me wants to take a minute to honor Desiree's beautiful Grandma Maria. Desiree and her family participated in this year's Alzheimer walk in honor of Grandma Maria who battled Alzheimer’s for the past 15 years. They walked by her side and in her honor when she couldn’t make it, every year at the Alzheimer’s Walk. She passed away three weeks before the walk this year, it was the hardest walk they have participated in.

Together they walked for her again as a family!

We love seeing Desiree's family come together and we send our love, prayers and support to all other participants who showed up for this amazing event to honor their loved ones or support a friend.

Thank you Alzheimer Association for pulling together an event that families can unite and remember! We Love You DES!

Technology

By Eileen Doherty, MS ~

Denver, Colo. – Some embrace technology, others tolerate it, and still others hate it.  While most of us can relate to these feelings whether it is the cell phone that is overly confusing, the television that won’t shut off with just the click of a button, or an electric scooter that helps us do our own grocery shopping.

Sometimes technology is just convenient, but other times it allows us to live longer independently.  A home that is equipped with security cameras allows someone to receive notifications when you go in and out of the house.  The smartwatch allows someone to send notifications when it is time to take your medications or for emergency assistance to be called if you fall and can’t get up without help.

Technology is beneficial in the kitchen. A coffee pot can be set to turn off in two hours if no one has used any coffee to prevent a fire.  A smart stove can be turned on and off remotely, again allowing someone to check if the stove was turned off after cooking.

Yard work can be extremely difficult for many older adults.  Laying a sprinkler system with a remote control can allow you to water your lawn by using the phone app.  A phone app can change the temperature in your house if getting out of a chair is difficult.  Other apps can turn the lights off safely after you are in bed, rather than having to find your way to bed with a night light and risking a fall.

Technology is one of the keys to helping you stay in your home longer.  Embrace it and use it.  If you have questions, call 303-333-3482 or 1-855-293-6911 (toll free) or 1-866-880-4777 (Spanish).

Should I Get SS Benefit ASAP?

Story by James Brumley

Even if you love your job, let's face it -- you'd probably still like to have the option of retiring early. Most of us don't have that option simply because we don't (or won't) have enough money to do so. We need to continue tucking away a portion of our wages for a while longer, or we need to delay Social Security retirement benefit payments so those eventual payments will be bigger, or both. There's actually a decent case to be made, however, for beginning your Social Security benefits at the earliest possible age of 62.

Minor reasons to start Social Security as soon as possible

For a long time, Social Security treated 66 as the full retirement age, or FRA. That's the age at which a beneficiary can receive 100% of their intended benefits. The number has been ratcheted up to 67 for anyone born in or after 1960 to reflect the fact people are generally living longer than they used to.

So if starting your Social Security retirement benefits before you've reached your FRA is an option, why isn't everyone signing up as soon as they turn 62?

There's a financial cost to taking benefits early. Indeed, the further away you are from your full retirement age when you claim, the smaller your monthly payments will be. For example, should you initiate your payments at the earliest possible age of 62, your checks will be on the order of 30% less than they'd be by holding out until you've hit your FRA of 67. That difference also doesn't take into account the possibility of waiting to claim until age 70, at which time delayed retirement credits would boost your monthly payments an additional 24% higher.

Initiating your payments at 62 years of age, however, still isn't a terrible idea for some people, for a handful of reasons. One of these reasons is obvious: You just need to. Whether failing health prevents you from working or bills just need to be paid (or a combination of both), postponing dealing with a problem often allows that problem to grow.

Another legitimate reason to claim Social Security as soon as possible is to maximize you and your spouse's net benefits while also minimizing your risk should one of you pass away earlier than expected. If minor children are in the picture, that's also a consideration.

The rules regarding spousal benefits are quite tricky, so be sure to discuss your options with a qualified financial professional. You can also discuss the matter directly with a representative of the Social Security Administration, although these employees can't help you with other end-of-life and estate-planning issues.

Yet another motivating factor for claiming Social Security sooner rather than later is the prospect of Social Security's pool of funds not being able to cover all of its intended payments in the foreseeable future. Depending on the estimate in question, a retiree's benefits could be reduced by 20% to 25% sometime in the mid-2030s. Starting your benefits as soon as possible means you'll be collecting all of whatever benefits you're due at your age ... at least for a few years.
